Savory Sandwiches
There's a new deli at 641 S. Fourth St., and it offers customers several savory alternatives to ham and cheese or chicken salad. Safier Mediterranean Deli's sandwiches include beef shawarma (sliced steak), kafta kabob (ground beef) and shish tawook (marinated chicken). And for vegetarians or meat-eaters looking for a change of pace, there's also a splended falafel sandwich.
Large patties of spiced "ground dried vegetables (according to the menu) were fried to a delightful crispness (chickpeas are the main ingredient). They were wrapped in fresh pita with tomatoes, lettuce, pickle and the perfect portion of nutty tihini sauce. It's definitely a two-handed sandwich and easier to eat when cut in half.
Safier also has stuffed grape leaves, salads such as tabbouleh and yogurt & cucumber, hummos, Athenian broiled chicken and baklava.
